I hope I wasn’t being too harsh…cap letters always looks like shouting but I feel like I have to shout this from the rooftops. I have a particular bias when it comes to “putting yourself in another shoes.” It’s such a cliche that really is meaningless. Unless you’re a black woman, it’s going to be difficult for you to imagine what a black woman’s life is like. That’s why it’s best to talk, but mostly to observe and to co-design with people. They know more about their needs than you can ever know. And our job as designers is to work with them to understand those needs for design. Yes we listen. But we should watch, listen and learn and show up differently if not we’re not practicing human-centered design. We’re practicing design-centered design. :)
