I believe that machines can learn the patterns of anything including abstract concepts such as love, trust and intimacy. But I don't think they will ever understand them in a way that we do. It's kind of like Data learning to tell a joke. He understands the mechanics of joke telling, the idea of a set up, a distracting middle and then a punchline, but the idea of telling a joke such as the one that Eddie Murphy tells in Raw about being chastised by Bill Cosby about his work in Delirious. Which given the events of today is even more poignant and brilliant. No machine will be able to get that comedic genuis.
